The word “sheen” refers to the finish or gloss level of your paint; the higher the gloss level, the shinier the paint will appear. There are different levels of paint sheen and the type that you use will be determined by your own personal style and the tone that you would like to set in your bedroom, bathroom or kitchen.
Five Different Levels of Shine
Since there are different types of sheen, it is very important to think carefully about the type you should use; you need to have an understanding of each type of paint finish so that you can make the right decision.
Matt Sheen
This level of shine has a matt coating; this means that it has no shine at all. It is generally used to conceal surface imperfections. This paint sheen is ideal for “low traffic” areas such as bedrooms.
Eggshell
This type of finish has a touch of gloss and covers surface imperfection. Eggshell is perfect for dining rooms and bedroom walls.
Satin
A satin paint finish has a velvet type gloss and is easy to clean. It can be used in any room but it is ideal for your lounge or family room.
Semi-Gloss
Semi-gloss has a higher level of gloss than the three finishes described above. It is perfect for use in your kitchen and bathroom.
High Gloss
Paint with this level of sheen is perfect for use on wooden furniture such as cabinets, and it can also be used on doors and in your kitchen.
